Service and Leadership Scholarships are awarded to incoming students who are making a difference in their schools, communities, and the world around them. Awards of up to $5,000 per year recognize students with extensive, sustained commitment to social concerns, community service, social action, or volunteerism. Awards are also made to students who have demonstrated exemplary levels of leadership in extracurricular activities within their schools and communities.
Service and Leadership Scholarships are part of our long-standing commitment to social concerns and to preparing students to be active citizens and participants in our world. Knox's founders were leaders in the worldwide anti-slavery movement. In the early 20th century, Knox graduates were prominent among the "muckrakers" who pioneered the field of investigative journalism. More recently, Knox has been a leader in sending graduates to the Peace Corps and developed the country's first Peace Corps Preparatory Program.
To apply for a Service and Leadership Scholarship, submit an application for admission to Knox, along with a separate written statement describing your service and leadership activities submitted electronically on your application status page through Portfolio. Your application status page will be available within about 48 hours of submitting your Common Application -- we’ll send you an e-mail with a link to create a password and access your application status page.
Your written statement should be submitted by the same deadline as your application for admission (see knox.edu/apply for specific deadlines).
Candidates are notified of their scholarship awards at the time of admission.
General Scholarship Guidelines
Service and leadership scholarships are renewable annually as long as recipients remain in good academic standing. Scholarships must be applied toward the cost of tuition and the combination of Knox scholarships and grants and federal and state grants cannot exceed the cost of tuition. Scholarship recipients often qualify for additional need-based financial assistance, including grants, work-study programs, and loans.
