Knox offers three scholarships—the Lincoln Scholarship, Hermann R. Muelder Scholarship, and Ellen Browning Scripps Scholarship—that reward incoming first-year students for their excellent academic performance in high school. The Lincoln Scholarship—our highest recognition for first-year students—offers awards of up to $15,000 per year. Lincoln Scholarship recipients form a select group of the nation's best and brightest students. The Lincoln Scholarship honors the special relationship between Knox and Abraham Lincoln. Knox hosted one of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, and in 1860 Lincoln was the first person to receive an honorary degree from Knox. Research into Lincoln's pre-presidential years, and publications about Lincoln, done by the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College, have been featured on The History Channel and have won numerous national awards. The Hermann R. Muelder Scholarship, named for one of our most respected history professors, offers awards of up to $10,000 per year. Muelder wrote critically acclaimed works about the history of the Midwest, the anti-slavery founders of Knox, and the City of Galesburg. His research on a contingent of African-American Civil War soldiers from Galesburg was the basis for the Academy Award-winning film "Glory." Ellen Browning Scripps Scholarship
The Scripps Scholarship awards up to $7,500 annually to first-year students with strong academic backgrounds. An 1859 graduate of Knox, Ellen Browning Scripps was co-founder of the Scripps Howard newspaper chain. Her philanthropic support helped establish Scripps College in California and Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Chicago Scholarship
Students attending high schools in the city of Chicago and graduating in the top 20 percent of their class are eligible for a scholarship of up to $10,000 per year, provided they have not received another Knox academic scholarship. Chicago Scholarships recognize the special relationship between Knox and the City of Big Shoulders. Founded the same year as Knox (1837), Chicago is home to more of our alumni than any other city. Western Illinois Achievers Scholarship
Students attending high schools in Western Illinois who show strong academic promise and a love for learning are eligible for a scholarship of $10,000 per year ($40,000 over four years). Western Illinois Achievers Scholarships recognize the special relationship between Knox College and Western Illinois. Two students from each high school in Western Illinois will be chosen for the awards. Candidates should have taken challenging courses, achieved at a high level, and contributed to their schools and communities. Scholarships will be awarded at high schools in the following Western Illinois counties: Fulton, Henderson, Henry, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Peoria, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren, and Woodford. Harry T. and Leone Goulding Scholarship
Harry T. and Leone Goulding Scholarships are merit-based awards of up to $10,000 per year for first-year students who are Navajo or from the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Candidates for these scholarships have taken challenging courses, performed well, and contributed to their schools and communities. Several Goulding Scholars are selected each year on the basis of their application for admission. The Goulding Scholarship was established in honor of Harry T. and Leone Goulding, long-time friends of Knox College and founders of the historic Goulding Trading Post in the Monument Valley area of Utah. During the early 1950's, the Gouldings donated land for the establishment of medical services for the valley's Navajo residents. Monument Valley Hospital was constructed near the Trading Post and Lodge in 1961 and still today serves the people of the area. Glenbrook Trustees Scholarship
Outstanding seniors from Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools are eligible for scholarships of up to $5,000 per year. Awards go to students whose applications for admission demonstrate academic excellence as well as significant contributions to their school and community. Knox College established these scholarships to recognize the contributions of Glenbrook North and South graduates to the Knox College community. Application Guidelines
All students who apply for first-year admission prior to February 1 will be considered for Knox's academic scholarships. A separate application is not required. Along with academic records, we look at applicants' essays, personal interviews, and recommendations. We seek students who demonstrate potential, integrity, and an enthusiasm for learning. Scholarship candidates must be admitted to Knox and be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Scholarship recipients often qualify for additional need-based financial assistance, including grants, work-study programs and loans.
