Knox College students planning international study or research can apply for support in meeting travel expenses related to their program of study, through grants awarded by the Joseph J. Hartog Endowment for Global Studies and Scholarship.
International study and research, especially if it occurs outside the regular academic year, often involves expenses that can not be covered by traditional sources, such as student financial aid. The Hartog Endowment's primary focus is supporting travel expenses for Knox students participating in short-term off-campus study programs. Additionally, the Fund may be used to support faculty research and development that enhances the global dimension of the curriculum and students' educational experiences.
The Hartog Endowment was established in 2005 by a gift of $100,000 from the estate of Joseph J. Hartog, an entrepreneur and businessman who valued international travel as an important means of gaining understanding of people and their cultures. The fund was created at the request of Mr. Hartog's daughter Elzelien Hartog, a 1966 Knox graduate and member of the Knox College Board of Trustees. Ms. Hartog serves as the Director of Interagency Collaboratives for the Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut.
