Eleanor Stellyes Center for Global Studies

The Center for Global Studies sponsors speakers and provides other on-campus initiatives. At Knox College, we firmly believe in a global education. Ours is an international campus with students and faculty from all over the world. Approximately 50% of Knox students study off campus before they graduate. No college education is complete unless it helps you understand the world in which you live and the people and issues you are certain to encounter as your life unfolds.

The Eleanor Stellyes Center for Global Studies facilitates your global education by:

  • Coordinating study abroad and off-campus programs
  • Sponsoring distinguished guest speakers and scholars-in-residence who bring international perspectives to campus
  • Promoting international travel and research
  • Integrating the experiences of students who have studied abroad into the life of the community

Knox offers 31 off-campus programs located in 18 countries as well as the United States. To assist you in applying and preparing for these programs, the Center offers the expertise of its director and coordinators along with resources such as books, CD-ROMs, and online journals in areas related to global studies, all found in our office located in the Old Knox County Jail building on campus.

Knox offers majors in international relations and integrated international studies, designed to provide an understanding of global issues.Strong academic component
Like all aspects of your personal educational plan, your off-campus study should promote your intellectual and career aims. It's not simply about exploring a new place; it's about connecting that place to what you'll study there, and placing the experience within the context of your overall academic goals.

Therefore, as you apply to study off campus, your proposal will describe the personal aspects that motivate you and explain how off-campus study will strengthen your educational experiences and contribute to your major or other educational goals.

Support for your study off campus might come from:

  • A diverse cross-section of faculty from a variety of disciplines, including political science, modern languages, history, economics, international relations, Asian studies, and more.
  • Numerous financial resources, including both the Hartog Endowment for Global Studies, which help you afford the cost of off-campus study programs and also fund faculty research and development in locations such as Tanzania and Japan, and the Natalie Veneziano Travel fund, which can assist in covering airfare expenses associated with participating in the Knox Program in Barcelona.
