Knox offers special programs for pre-medical students, EMT certification and transportation to off-campus events. Knox also has an active Pre-Med Club that sponsors presentations throughout the year by local physicians speaking about their specialties.
Knox has analyzed ten years' worth of the data for Knox students who took the MCAT. The link between MCAT score and grade point average (GPA) was 0.165, a very weak correlation.
The relationship between the total MCAT score and the score on the biology section was more significant -- 0.806, a very strong correlation. A very significant correlation was also observed between the total MCAT score and the score on the physics component of the MCAT. On the other hand, the association between verbal performance and the biology and physics components was very weak.
EMT Certification
Every other year, Knox offers a non-credit class leading to certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. An instructor comes to campus one evening a week for 16 weeks.
Off-Campus Events
Knox offers transportation for students to attend an admissions workshop every fall, sponsored by medical schools in Illinois. The workshop covers writing a personal statement, financing medical school, what medical schools look for in applicants, etc.
Knox also offers transportation to the Mini-Medical School at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria -- a weekly seminar series offered in the spring.
Knox is active in The American Medical Students Association (AMSA) and sends students annually to regional and national meetings.
Hannah Fidoten, a computer science and economics double-major, developed an Honors project that encourages local schoolchildren to pursue studies in STEM subjects -- science, technology, engineering, and math.
James Beard Award-winning author Paul Greenberg delivers the EquiKnox sustainability lecture centered on his best-welling book, Four Fish, and meets with Knox students to discuss his environmental research and writing. Related events include a sustainability fair and seafood dinner.
Guest speaker Joseph Gallian, a University of Minnesota-Duluth professor, explains to a Knox College audience how he deciphered the complicated method by which some states assigned driver's license numbers. The event was part of the MathTalks lecture series at Knox.
I find it incredibly exciting to work with students at this stage of their education. Their fresh approach is contagious. I am Linda
