The Program

Studying Business at Knox

Success in today's business world depends on creative innovation, leadership, teamwork, communication and problem solving—all of which will be central to not just your business and management courses, but to your Knox liberal arts education as whole.

Knox College's business and management program prepares students for success in business-related careers and graduate school by using a skills-based approach, allowing you to become well-versed in basics such as:

  • technical writing
  • accounting
  • statistics
  • microeconomics
  • managerial finance
  • human resources
  • marketing

…all while being immersed in the liberal arts curriculum that will challenge you to think for yourself and articulate your ideas clearly. As a Knox student, you'll receive a broad-based education that will provide you with not only the skills specific to business, but also the writing, communicating and critical thinking background essential in nearly every kind of career.

The program is interdisciplinary, drawing on expertise from faculty in psychology, philosophy, economics and political science.

Business Ethics
Along with learning the techniques you'll need to be successful in business, you'll also concentrate on "the bigger picture"—what it means to make ethical decisions in business. As a student in Knox's business and management program, you'll take essential courses such as Business and Society—which critically analyzes issues that business businesses face today, including corporate social responsibility—and Ethics and Business, in which you'll read, write and think about the nature of business and its relation to a good human life.

These courses serves as a microcosm of the entire program, which focuses on critical thinking and ethical decision making. You'll examine questions such as:

  • How do managers make financial, marketing and strategic decisions in the face of competing demands from stockholders?
  • What strategies are being used in product pricing, distribution and promotion, and what are the ethical dilemmas faced in implementing them?
  • How are e-business and global business impacting society, laws and business decisions?

Pursuing a Minor in Business and Management
The interdisciplinary program allows you the practical option of combining a minor in business and management with any academic major. The minor consists of five core courses along with a concentration consisting of two courses. Since the field of business and management is broad and encompasses many different aspects, the flexible program allows you to choose from seven concentrations when pursuing a minor in business and management:

  • Finance
  • Human Resources Management
  • Strategic Management
  • Environmental Management
  • Public Sector
  • International Business
  • Independent concentration

Common combinations with the business and management minor include majors such as:

  • Economics
  • Mathematical Finance
  • Psychology
  • Social sciences
  • Computer science
  • Political Science
  • Environmental Studies
  • International Relations
  • Theatre
  • Physics
  • Independent major

…but nearly every academic major can be enhanced by a minor in business and management.
