Annual Burn Revitalizes PrairieOne of Knox’s most valued traditions is the annual spring Prairie Burn, which brings together students in a prairie restoration project that inspired the name for Knox College's "Prairie Fire" athletic teams. Dressed in new flame retardant yellow and green clothing, students tackled the project of burning the dry old growth on the prairies, allowing for new grasses and other plants of the prairie to flourish, protecting it from intrusions of woodland scrub and other "exotic" species that have been introduced to Illinois from other regions or countries. |

Knox Alumnus Wins Freedom for Wrongfully Imprisoned ManAttorney Edward Novak, a Knox College graduate, led the Arizona legal team that recently won freedom for a man who, despite his steadfast claims of innocence, was convicted of arson and imprisoned more than 40 years ago. Taylor's case attracted the attention of the Arizona Justice Project, a nonprofit group that works to overturn and prevent wrongful convictions, which was co-founded by Novak. Alumnus Receives National Science Foundation GrantEdward Dale, a 2010 Knox College graduate, has been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, which recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. He will use the grant to help support the various molecular research projects he is pursuing in graduate school. Being a student at Knox "shaped me in so many ways," said Dale, who co-authored a Journal of Chemical Crystallography article. Three Years in a Row, Knox Student Wins Regional Writing AwardFor the third time in three years, Knox College student Julia Ohman has been honored as a finalist in the Nick Adams Short Story Contest. Her short story, "The Mangroves," is one of six finalists for 2013, selected from nearly 40 entries submitted by students at 14 private liberal arts colleges in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.. A creative writing major from Portland, who was a co-editor of fiction for Catch, Knox's student literary journal, Julia is only the second college writer to receive three finalist awards in the 40-year history of the competition. Art Students Present Culmination of Their Work at KnoxKnox’s studio art major culminates in Open Studio, in which senior students immerse themselves in their work for the entire winter term and take no other courses. The Open Studio experience offers a stimulating, creative community that rewards intellectual and creative risks, culminating in a series of individual and group exhibits of their work. Students spend six hours each week in intensive critical exchanges with a team of faculty members in addition to weekly meetings with their faculty mentors. Each year, Knox College and the Galesburg community host the Knox-Rootabaga Jazz Festival. 'Baga, as it is affectionately known by band members, features performances by big name guest artists as well as Knox students, faculty, and staff. The Knox College Jazz Ensemble and the Knox Cherry Street Combo recently returned to campus with multiple awards from the annual Elmhurst Jazz Festival, which attracts some of the country's best college jazz bands. "We have some talented and inspired individuals here, and I'm pleased to be working with them," said Knox senior and jazz percussionist Josh Calef. 
From sets to costumes to paperwork, the Knox College production of Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle is shining a spotlight on reducing waste and promoting sustainability -- in theatrical production as well as the larger community. This year, students raised the emphasis on sustainability to a new level by methodically examining every aspect of the production, down to paperwork. 
Knox alumna and broadcast journalist Lara Moritz returned to Knox College to share her experiences and talk with students about the importance of listening carefully in order to tell a story. She told students that giving her subjects a voice required her to let them speak for themselves. "Letting someone tell their stories is the best way to get to the truth," Moritz said, noting that silence either makes people uncomfortable enough that they start speaking or relaxed enough that they are willing to share information with her.
