Annual Burn Revitalizes Prairie
One of Knox’s most valued traditions is the annual spring Prairie Burn, which brings together students in a prairie restoration project that inspired the name for Knox College's "Prairie Fire" athletic teams. Dressed in new flame retardant yellow and green clothing, students tackled the project of burning the dry old growth on the prairies, allowing for new grasses and other plants of the prairie to flourish, protecting it from intrusions of woodland scrub and other "exotic" species that have been introduced to Illinois from other regions or countries.

With near perfect weather conditions, the group worked through each prairie with relative ease.

Liberal Arts Colleges Better Prepare People for Service Around the World
Knox hosted a peacebuilding conference that featured an interactive workshop and panel discussions with volunteers from the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and KnoxCorps. Keynote speaker and former Peace Corps acting director Jody Olson focused on stories from Peace Corps volunteers in China, Thailand, and Togo. Sharing stories and experiences from abroad is part of the Peace Corps' goal of cultural exchange. "The country directors all talk about the quality of service given by liberal arts students," Olsen said. "In liberal arts colleges, students are really pushed to try out who they are, and that is the preparatory skill -- that skill of knowing how to take risks and pushing yourself out, respecting cultures, respecting languages. It's great preparation." Learn more about the conference, the wisdom former acting director Jody Olson shared, and Knox's Peace Corps Preparatory program.

KnoxCorps: Acting Locally, Making a Difference
Only a few steps away from the Galesburg train station, a group of homeschoolers are about to set out on a journey of their own via the Discovery Depot, a local children's museum. They won't go anywhere. No one will leave the building or watch trees slowly groove past the smooth plane of a plexiglass window. But in their hands are pieces of cardstock, decorated with pictures, and underneath the illustrations, words in a foreign language: estrella for star, la dama for lady, sol for sun. And in front of the students stands Juliette Campbell, KnoxCorps Fellow and bilingualism incarnate, who knows that learning's more fun when paired with a bingo-like game known south of here as loteria. Read more about what Juliette is doing with area youths and Knox’s innovative community service initiative, KnoxCorps.

Award-Winning Journalist Discusses the Power of Listening
Knox alumna and broadcast journalist Lara Moritz returned to Knox College to share her experiences and talk with students about the importance of listening carefully in order to tell a story. She told students that giving her subjects a voice required her to let them speak for themselves. "Letting someone tell their stories is the best way to get to the truth," Moritz said, noting that silence either makes people uncomfortable enough that they start speaking or relaxed enough that they are willing to share information with her. Learn more about Moritz and what she presented to students. |
