Remote Connections

Accessing your office computer via VPN

Users can access their office computers from home using secure remote connections. This will allow you to access the files on your computer and other network services as if you were working at your office. You will need to prepare your office computer to allow remot connections, and download VPN software on your home computer to access the Knox network and your personal computer.

1. Prepare Your Office Computer

 

  • Check your office computer to make sure you allow the connection:
  • Right click on My Computer and select Properties
  • Click on the Remote tab and check the box to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"

  • Click Apply and OK to close window.
  • You will also need to know your computer name:
  • Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  • Click on the Computer Name tab. You will use the name in the Computer Description field to connect from home. (Your Computer name will be different from this example.)

  • Leave your office computer on. You can lock it by using Control-Alt-Delete and Lock Computer, or Log out

2. Prepare Your Home Computer

 

  • Go to https://access.knox.edu
    VPN Service Home Screen
  • Log-in using your network username and password.
    Select your Group from the drop-down menu: faculty, student or staff
  • Click Log-in
  • Click on the AnyConnect tab on the left side

  • On the AnyConnect screen, click on the Start AnyConnect link.
  • If you have not already installed the Cisco VPN client, follow the instructions to download and install.
  • Once the connection has been made you can use Remote Desktop to connect to your office computer.

3. Connect To Your Office Computer

 

  • On Start menu, go to Programs/Accessories/Remote Desktop Connection

  • For Computer name type in the computer name of your office computer.
  • Click connect.
  • Log in as you would in your office using your Knox email username and password.
  • You should now be able to use your office computer as if you were at work.
