New Knox Computer Users

computer centerWelcome to Knox! The Computer & Telecommunications Center and Help Desk is here to assist you connecting to the College network to aid in your studies and residential life. The information below will help you get your computer ready for your arrival. Once you're on campus, the Computer Center Help Desk staff will be available to assist you with any configuration and troubleshooting.

Before Your Arrive
1. Check Your Hardware

Computer Hardware
Your computer must meet certain minimum requirements to connect to the Knox Network. It is imperative you follow these instructions to ensure connectivity to the Knox Network once you arrive.

Wireless
All access to the Knox network is via wireless connections. Your computer must be equipped with the proper wireless network card. In addition, all devices must connect directly to the wireless network -- they cannot connect via a router or other access point.

Check Your System
You can now check your computer remotely to see if it meets requirements for connecting to the Knox network when you arrive.

  1. Go to http://scanme.knox.edu
  2. Click "Download" to download the scan agent.
  3. Double-click on the downloaded agent to run it.
    (Note: No action other than scanning and display of the results will be taken by the agent.)
  4. If your computer is up to standards, a "Success Page" will be displayed.
  5. If not, a Web page will be displayed showing where your computer is deficient.
    Links will be provided to assist you in bringing it up to standards.
2. Reset Your Password

To maintain security for your log-ins and network services, you need to update your password. This is a two-step process:

  1. Go to https://hd.knox.edu
  2. Log-in with your current e-mail username and password.
  3. You will be prompted to configure your "secret questions and answers."
  4. Click "Yes" and choose your questions and answers.
  5. Click "Save" followed by "Sign out" in the upper left corner of the screen.

Now you are ready to change your password.

  1. Go to https://hd.knox.edu. Do not log in.
  2. Click on "Reset Your Password" in the lower left corner of the window
  3. Enter your e-mail username, and answer your security questions.
  4. You will be prompted to set your password. If you fail to follow these instructions your password will expire.
3. Update Your Anti-Virus Software

Knox College has implemented a new anti-virus system utilizing Sophos. This software is provided free of charge to all Knox students. You must also remove any currently installed anti-virus software, including any that was previously provided by the College. If you do not install Sophos, you will not be able to connect to the network.

4. Update Your System Software

All computers connected to the Knox network must be kept current with all operating system updates to ensure maximum stability and security.

Windows PC Users: Both critical and custom updates, including Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

Mac Users: Check Software Update and and install all updates that are listed.

Virus Scan: Scan your computer for viruses using the freshly installed Sophos anti-virus software. Automatic scans are scheduled daily at 1:00 AM. The computer must be on for the scan to complete.

On Campus
1. Access and Register

Configure Wireless Connection
After following all of the above steps, you're ready to log on to the Knox College computer network. First you'll need to configure your computer to access the network via a wireless connection.

Register Your Computer
When you first access the Knox network by connecting to the Internet on campus, you will be prompted to register your computer with the network. This will also check your computer for compliance with hardware requirements, anti-virus installation, and any required operating system updates.

NOTE: ALL devices you want to connect to the Knox network need to be registered separately: desktop systems, laptops, Internet-capable cel phones, and videogame systems.

  1. Open your Web browser and try to go to any site. You will be directed to the network registration page.
  2. Log in using your Knox username and password.
  3. Follow all on-screen instructions.
  4. If your computer passes the test, you will be registered and placed on the network
  5. If you fail, please follow the links provided to bring your system up to requirements.
