Safety Programs

Safety On Campus
Learn different facets of campus safety that will assist you not only in college but also in the "real world." Learn basic crime prevention tips, know where to find security/safety resources, what you should do after a crime has occurred, and where to find support to assist you in your recovery.

Safety Off Campus
This program is a short presentation about the City of Galesburg and the attractions it has to offer. It is designed to provide the Knox community with information about activities in the local community, places to visit and how to get there. This presentation will focus on safety issues that may be helpful when you are off campus. This program will help educate you on community safety while enjoying all the great activities Galesburg has to offer.

Operation Identification
Protect your property in a way that helps ensure its return by participating in Operation ID. Please contact the Office of Campus Safety to make an appointment to have your property engraved with a personal identifier (i.e. license number, social security number, name, etc.). This is ideal for those who bring computers, stereos, portable CD players, etc., to campus. As an additional service, you can complete an owner's identification form and keep it on file with the Office of Campus Safety.

Safety Whistle Program
This program provides a high-quality brass whistle free of charge to students and employees. Those participating in the program are asked to carry their whistles with them at all times and to blow the whistle if they feel threatened by another person. Others who hear the whistle should go to the nearest emergency phone and call Campus Safety immediately. Persons blowing the whistle under any conditions other than those specified above will be referred to the Office of Student Development for disciplinary proceedings.

Education Programs

Alcohol & Drugs
The Office of Student Development provides programmatic initiatives in order to reduce the consumption of alcohol and other drugs by Knox College students. Such programs include training resident advisors in alcohol and other drug prevention. Resident advisors provide educational programming to resident first year students in an attempt to educate students on the health risks associated with such consumption. Alcohol education is also an integral part of student orientation during fall term. Finally, head resident staff receives training in the health risks associated with the consumption of alcohol and other drugs.

Sexual Assault Prevention
Sexual assaults continue to be a serious problem facing many campuses today, as the crime often goes underreported. The College offers programs dealing with issues of sexual assault prevention. During orientation, the Office of Student Development sponsors a program entitled "Sex Signals" which combines interactive theatre with issues of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, etc. This program is offered for all first year students during Orientation. The Office of Campus Safety offers a program dealing directly with issues of sexual assault prevention. This program covers issues of rape, acquaintance rape, and other forcible and non-forcible sex offenses. For more information on this program, please contact the director of campus safety at extension 7255.
