Campus Emergency Procedures

To keep the Knox College campus safe for all students, faculty, staff and visitors and to expedite aid in the event of an emergency, please follow these tips while on campus.

How to Report a Crime

It is very important that all crime and suspicious activity be reported promptly to the Office of Campus Safety. Please call extension 7979 to report a crime. Please be patient and stay on the line so we can get the information we need to follow up on your call.

When calling the Office of Campus Safety, we would like you to leave your name and extension number so we can contact you if further investigation is necessary. Campus Safety Officers are available 24 hours a day and will respond immediately to your location.

We encourage all students, faculty and staff to accurately and promptly report all crimes to the Office of Campus Safety and, when necessary, to the local police department.

How To Report a Fire

In case of a fire or an explosion, immediately activate the nearest fire alarm and call the Galesburg Fire Department at 911. Then, notify the Office of Campus Safety at extension 7979.

When a fire alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and close all doors. Prompt and complete evacuation of campus buildings or facilities is mandatory when a fire alarm is sounded or when directed to do so by College personnel. Individuals who violate this policy are subject to disciplinary action. Fire doors and fire escapes are to be used only in case of an emergency.

Making a 911 call

911 is the number to call in any campus emergency. From campus phones, dial 3-911 for fire, medical, or police assistance. If you feel threatened, do not hesitate-call for help immediately and stay on the phone so the dispatcher can get the information they need from you. If possible, Campus Safety should also be notified immediately after the emergency call was completed. We can be reached at extension 7979, or 341-7979.

Tornado & Severe Weather

A tornado WATCH means the conditions are favorable for a tornado to develop. During a tornado WATCH, students should pay particular attention to the weather as conditions can change in a matter of seconds.

If a tornado siren begins or a tornado WARNING is issued, it means a funnel cloud and/or tornado has been spotted and you should take cover immediately, preferably in a basement of a building and away from windows. After a tornado passes, wait for instructions from College personnel or city authorities. Always stay away from downed power lines or unsafe building areas.

Remember: The tornado warning sounds for only 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Just because the siren ceases does not mean the warning is over. College personnel will notify you when the warning is over and we have received the all-clear notification.

Snow Emergency

When two or more inches of new snow have accumulated the city declares a snow emergency, which requires the removal of all vehicles from the streets. The fine is $25.00 plus towing charges. If it snows, move your vehicle to any of the College parking lots. Once the streets have been plowed, you may return your vehicle to the street. Local radio stations will announce when a snow emergency is in effect.
