Memorial Gymnasium

Enhancements to Gym and Lobby

Memorial GymMemorial Gymnasium was built in 1950 as a cooperative effort between Galesburg businessmen and Knox College to honor World War I and II veterans. Its maple floor is ideal for varsity level basketball and volleyball, as well as intramural volleyball, and it has the largest seating capacity in the Midwest Conference. But since its original construction, the look and feel of the gym has not changed.

Memorial Gym received a facelift in the spring of 2008 that retained the integrity and vintage feel of the facility, while giving the gym some very modern updates. Fundraising efforts were spurred by the generosity of Duke '74 and Nancy Petrovich, who provided half of the renovation cost. Other six-figure leadership donors to the renovation were Tom '66 and Sue Fuerst Anderson '71.

Enhancements to the Gym include:

  • A new HVAC system
  • Walls painted one consistent color
  • New wood bleachers that are auto-tracking for ease of movement
  • A new sound system that allows teams and spectators to hear the spoken word
  • Scoreboard upgrades
  • New banners and logo
  • New scorer's table with modern hookups

The lobby area now features:

  • Rubber flooring to match the E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center lobby
  • Redesigned, retrofitted, and accessible men's and women's restroom facilities
  • An upgraded concession stand
