The Prairie Fire women started off the 2009 Basketball homecoming celebration well with a 59-48 win over Lawrence University. It was the second time this season that the Prairie Fire beat the Vikings. The first time was at Lawrence on December 5, 2008 with a score of 66-63 in overtime.
In today's game, the Vikings came out ready to play as they scored first. Not even a minutes later though the Prairie Fire took back the lead with a three pointer by Lynn Mueller. Three minutes later the Vikings tied it up again and then took the lead to make it 7-9 Vikings with 13 minutes left in the first half. The Prairie Fire then took it back and held onto it until there were four minutes left in the first half when the Vikings pulled ahead 19-20. The Viking lead did not last long though as the Prairie Fire ended the half Knox 24, Lawrence 20.
Knox came out scoring in the second and five minutes in had extended their lead by ten (35-25). The Vikings tried to come back - one point decreasing the gap to only two points - but the Prairie Fire were determined to win and the game ended Knox 59, Lawrence 48.
Top performers for the Prairie Fire today were junior Erin Navolio (pictured at right), freshman Krystyna Williams, freshman Lynn Mueller, and senior co-captain Hayle Gosnell. Navolio led the team with 17 points, six steals, two assists, and 11 rebounds. Williams followed with 10 points, one block, and five rebounds. Mueller had nine points, eight assists, three steals and two rebounds and Gosnell scored eight points, had one assist, two steals and one rebound to help out in the Prairie Fire win.
The Prairie Fire team will take on Grinnell at home this coming Wednesday, February 11 at 5:00 p.m.
