Scroll of Honor

The 1965 Knox Fifty Year Club Bulletin published a short article about the possibility of a Fifty Year Club Hall of Distinction to recognize and honor members "whose lives and career accomplishments have not, as yet, been widely publicized through Knox or Lombard sources." Several names were proposed for this award, including "Siwash Halls of Ivy!"

A name was decided upon and the Scroll of Honor Award was created. That same year, the initial eight recipients received a Scroll. The Scroll of Honor award is presented to members, including honorary members, to recognize that member's lifetime achievements in the service of their community, society or humanity.

Knox-Lombard Fifty Year Club members and friends may submit names and biographical information for consideration. Up to three awards will be presented annually. To nominate a member for the Knox-Lombard Scroll of Honor, send the name and a brief biographical sketch to Megan Clayton, Coordinator of Activities, Knox College Campus Box K-210, Galesburg, Illinois 61401. Members of the Knox College Board of Trustees, Knox Honorary Degree recipients and those who have received the Knox College Alumni Achievement award are not eligible for the award.

Ann Jung Finney '58Ann Jung Finney '58, Elk Grove Village, Illinois, retired as vice president of marketing at Harris Trust and Savings Bank in June 2002. Milestones in her 44-year career in finance and health care include developing prize-winning direct mail and advertising; providing communications support for the establishment of a multibank holding company and, later, for an IPO taking the same multibank holding company public; supporting multiple acquisitions and de novo bank starts; writing the first study of computerized medicine in 1964; building support for Illinois' first paramedic program; chairing disaster communications for a 13 hospital north suburban consortium; and election by the media as a media representative on a joint hospital public relations practitioners and reporters task force. Her volunteer work has included selection as Project Hope's first onboard public relations person; writing position papers and direct mail campaigns for four different gubernatorial and senatorial campaigns for Democratic and Republican candidates; serving in the non-political press office of the Chicago '96 Democratic Convention; spending time weekly with 3-4-year-old abandoned children; and putting together packets of clothing and personal items for Katrina victims. She has also served Knox as a Class Agent and as a 50th Reunion campaign volunteer. Currently, she holds CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) certification, providing rescue support in times of disaster. Her scroll of honor is awarded for her dedication to finance, healthcare, and helping those less fortunate.

John "Jack" Munson '55 is a TKE alumnus and has served Knox as a class agent and career services volunteer. Jack retired from the Unisys Corporation space systems division as vice president and general manager, where he managed all the computer systems in flight operations for the space shuttle for 10 years. Prior to his position at Unisys, he served as president of International Software Systems and corporate vice president of technical operations at System Development Corporation, an information processing systems company in Washington, D.C. He served on the United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board for six years and was inducted into the National Management Association Hall of Fame in 1994. He has more than 30 years experience applying computer technology to military space systems, satellites, space surveillance, and defense systems, as well as NASA manned space systems. Jack is a national authority on acquisition management of embedded computer systems. For his work in this field, he has received medals from the United States Air Force, United States Navy, and NATO. He is married to Anne Cooper Munson '57, and they make their home in Westlake Village, California.

Robert L. Willett Jr. first came to Knox in 1944 as a member of the Army Air Corps 3659th Service Unit. After his military service, he came back to Knox to complete his degree in 1950. After serving another year in the military in Korea, he began a banking career in both the public and private sector. During his career, he earned an M.B.A. from Western Michigan University. In the private sector, he spent 30 years in banks in Michigan and Florida, serving as president and member of the board of directors in banks in those two states. Later, he and his family moved to Saipan where he started the Marine Merchant Bank and Trust Company and served as its first president. Throughout his career, Bob has been active in his communities, accepting positions such as chamber of commerce president, United Fund chairman, Presbyterian church elder, and YMCA board member. In 1989, he joined Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to work for the Resolution Trust Corporation as managing agent in several troubled savings and loan institutions, assisting in the liquidation of their various types of assets. Retiring from FDIC in 1993, he began a series of volunteer bank consulting assignments in third world countries. These took him to such exotic places as Cluj-Napoca, Romania; Chisinau, Moldova; Warsaw and Szczecin, Poland; Kampala, Uganda; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; Shanghai; Amman, Jordan; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as well as several cities in both European and Far East, Russia. One of his recent projects was in Erbil and Bagdad, Iraq, advising newly created private banks on systems and products. In addition to his bank experiences he has written numerous articles on a variety of subjects; travel, banking, WWI, WWII, aviation, and the Civil War. He is also the author of four books, the most recent was an Airline at War; Pan Am's China National Aviation Corporation and its Men published in 2008. Bob and his wife, Donna, live in Merritt Island, Florida, and from there travel extensively. To date they have visited more than 100 countries and plan more upcoming trips.
