Study Abroad & Off-Campus Programs

Off-Campus Off-Campus Off-Campus Off-Campus

Picture yourself in a tent camp on the plains of the Serengeti pursuing field study work in ecology.

Imagine your life as a student of Buddhism and meditation in the small north Indian town where the prince-ascetic Gotama became the fully enlightened Buddha.

See yourself immersed in the history, art, and culture of Barcelona, Spain, balancing your university studies with your own adventures throughout Europe.

As you might expect from a college that's devoted to giving you the freedom to flourish, Knox wants you to become a student of the world and provides opportunities to expand your learning with study abroad. With experiential learning as a key focus of the Knox education, 50% of Knox students grab a taste of the "real world" with study abroad and other off-campus programs.

Like all aspects of your personal educational plan, your off-campus study should be intentional. Therefore, you'll need to think about how your off-campus study will strengthen your academic experiences, contribute to your major and other educational goals you wish to meet, and help you make a difference in the world.

Those considerations will affect a whole range of your choices, such as:

  • Travel abroad or within the United States? Knox offers more than 30 off-campus programs in the U.S. and 19 other countries around the world, but it's not simply about exploring a new place. It's about connecting that place to what you'll study there, and placing the experience within the context your overall academic goals.
  • As a junior or at some other time? Most students study off campus during their junior year to ensure they are academically and socially prepared. But most important is that the timing is right for fitting into your educational plan.
  • For one term, more, or less? Off-campus study for academic credit may last one, two, or three terms. But short-term experiences are also offered in conjunction with on-campus courses. The length of time you study off campus should, once again, be determined by how best you can accomplish the goals in your educational plan.
  • In English or some other language? For some programs, you must be fluent in the host country's language; other courses are conducted in English. Studying a particular subject in a different language can be a valuable component of your educational plan.

Whether you're seeking a term in Washington, D.C., or a year in China, Knox offers a variety of options to meet your location, duration, and financial needs. And if your imagination takes you to places not on Knox's list of current offerings, you can create your own study abroad experience.

The world is waiting!
