Coursework in Chinese emphasizes language study as a gateway to understanding another culture, the world, and our place in it. The Department of Modern Languages offers elementary language instruction in Chinese, with an emphasis on the development of language skills: listening, comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Essentials of grammar are complemented by readings in literature and culture, with extensive practice in speaking. For a more intensive experience, the College also cooperates with the CIEE Chinese Language Program at Peking University.
