Recycling at Knox

Knox College has had a recycling program since 1993. Working with Knox Advocates for Recycling and Environmental Support (KARES), Facilities Services has broadened the kinds of materials that can be recycled at Knox. Recycling bins are in every building on campus, and in every dorm room.

Knox works with a local service that picks up our recyclable materials and transports them to a facility in Seaton, Illinois, where the items are sorted. From there, the materials are disbursed to local recycling centers. Knox currently produces 55.05 tons of recycling per year, 1.05 tons per week.

RecycleWhat can be recycled at Knox?

  • #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 7 plastics - such as soda and disposable water bottles
  • Any metal
  • Cardboard - such as cereal boxes and shipping boxes
  • Paper, newspaper and magazines
  • Glass

Reduce your carbon footprint and impact on the environment by following a few easy steps:

  • Obtain a white recycling bag from under the KARES Board outside
    of the Hard Knox Café.
  • Put your recyclables in the white bag; large boxes can be broken
down and placed next to the bags.
  • Place the tied white bag outside of the entrance to your building on
    Thursdays before 10 a.m.

Important Tips:

  • Only throw recyclable materials in receptacles, no food or trash.
  • Empty aluminum cans before tossing them in.
  • Keep your recycling in the receptacle in your room. Due to local fire codes, we cannot hold recyclables in suite areas.
