Where can I find...?

Many resources related to the ins-and-outs of faculty life can be found on the Faculty-Staff Google Drive, available here.

How do I say no to a colleague or an opportunity?

As a member of the Knox faculty, you have a lot of power to shape what your schedule and workflow looks like on a day-to-day basis. There are a lot of wonderful ways for you to get involved at the college. It is also important to make sure that you are balancing the research, teaching, and service work that you have to get done with the obligations of your personal life. When presented with a new opportunity, it's important to ask yourself:

  • What time and resources are required to complete this task?
  • Do I have the time and resources to complete this task in the timeframe required?
  • Do I need to let go of something that I am doing to make room for this opportunity? Am I okay with that tradeoff?
  • How will I feel when this opportunity is completed?

Seek input from people familiar with the type of opportunity you are considering. Mentors and colleagues can provide valuable context and information. If you decide to forego the opportunity, here are some ways to say no:

  • "I'm afraid I'm not the best person to help you with this. Have you thought about asking _____?"
  • "I'd love to help, but I really don't have time for a formal commitment. Maybe we could just talk once of twice."
  • "I'm sorry, but I've just got too many other commitments right now."
  • "That sounds interested, but can I call you back tomorrow? I need a little time to think about it before I decide."
