Cultural Centers

Why our cultural centers matter so much:

1. They celebrate our diversity. We're proud to be one of the most diverse campuses in the country. Our cultural centers— A.B.L.E. Center for Black Culture, Asian Cultural Center, Casa Latina, Harambee Cultural Center, Human Rights Center, International House, and the Queer and Ally (Q&A) Cultural Center—are permanent, living proof of that pride.
2. They make our diversity vital. Each cultural center is affiliated with related student-run organizations; every term the centers host student organization meetings and campus-wide social and educational events. They're a place to meet, to organize, to celebrate and to form community.
3. They're a campus resource. Each cultural center in collaboration with Intercultural Life organizes cultural and diversity-related issues. 

Allied Blacks for Liberty & Equality (A.B.L.E.) Cultural Center

The A.B.L.E. Center promotes cultural, economic, and social awareness of the Afro-centric, African, and African American communities.  In addition to being the primary space for the A.B.L.E. student organization events, the A.B.L.E. Center is open to the entire Knox community and is a thriving hub for social gatherings, meetings, and study.

Asian Cultural Center

Asian Cultural Center promotes cultural awareness and understanding of all peoples claiming Asian heritage, international and domestic, from the Middle to the Far East, and everything in between. Asian Cultural Center includes all Asian culture organizations on campus under its umbrella and is utilized by the Chinese Club, Japanese Club, Korean Club, Asian Student Association, and aaina for events.

Casa Latina Cultural Center

Casa Latina Cultural Center promotes Spanish, Latinx, Chicanx, Mexican-American, and Latin American lives and cultures. The Casa Latina Cultural Center is affiliated with Lo Nuestro, a student organization focusing on Latinx cultural awareness, which uses the Center for general meetings and events. The Center is an open, inviting place on campus for people who are interested in learning through shared experience.

Harambee Cultural Center

Harambee Cultural Center promotes African-Pan-African identity. Harambee which means "unity" or "working together" in Swahili, also indicates the desire of organization members to educate students about the many countries in Africa and Pan-African diaspora. Harambee Cultural Center serves as the meeting and events location for Harambee student organization and is open to the entire Knox community.

Human Rights Center (HRC)

The Human Rights Center (HRC) provides an outlet for progressive thought, open-minded discussions, and human rights activism. This nonresidential center is open to all members of the Knox community and is designated as a "safe zone" for anyone desiring a safe space to discuss and explore personal issues and views.

The HRC is a co-operative; a variety of student organizations work together to address human rights and social justice concerns with an emphasis on educating the Knox community through encouraging and demonstrating activism. Individuals from each organization come together to form the HRC task force which addresses issues concerning the cultural center as a whole and the outside community.

International House (I-House)

The International House is a coeducational, intercultural residence center where international and domestic students live together. The International House promotes understanding and mutual respect among students and encourages them to explore other cultures. The house is open to all students and provides the campus community with a venue for programs and events. As a residence celebrating cultural diversity, the International House offers students an opportunity to live in a multicultural atmosphere.

Queer and Ally (Q&A) Cultural Center

Q&A Center provides a safe environment for LGBTQIA+ students to express their identity freely. This center honors intersectionality and celebrates all romantic, sexual, and gender identities including those who are exploring their sexual and gender identity/expression. Common Ground student organization is affiliated with Q&A Center however chooses to host their meetings in the student organization. Q&A Center welcomes members of the campus community who are allies of the LGBTQIA+ and community.
